10 Tips for Beginning Vegetarians

The Ten Tips Report is intended to make your life as a beginning vegetarian much easier than mine was. I have to admit that when I was going vegetarian, I probably would have ignored the 10 Tips Report. That's one reason why the past forty years of my life have been one long vegetarian research project!

Often there is 'scientific evidence' to back up what I say, and sometimes it's more personal. It's up to you whether you accept what I say - I'm a firm believer in healthy skepticism. But, if you'd rather not re-invent the wheel, these practical tips could be a good place to start going vegetarian.

Eat Beans Without Gas

The misunderstood bean has been a staple of the human diet for thousands of years, and a major source of high quality, inexpensive protein, combined with other foods. There are hundreds of varieties of legumes, with a corresponding range of tastes and nutritional qualities. Beans are adaptable to a huge variety of delicious vegetarian dishes.

The bean report is mostly unscientific, and sometimes irreverent, but the information is based on years of knowledge and practice as a vegetarian. I'm happy to share what I know, because I have the feeling that the beans/gas issue keeps quite a few people from a vegetarian diet.

Vegetarian Nutrition Report

Savvy Vegetarian takes a holistic view of vegetarian nutrition - we talk about specific nutritional values in context, but you won't find the usual lists of vitamins and minerals, and the vegetarian foods that contain them. Instead, these are general vegetarian nutritional guidelines, with a step-by step approach toward a high quality, balanced, varied vegetarian diet, from which good nutrition naturally follows.

You may need to make a few changes in your life to support your vegetarian diet, but you don’t have to stress yourself out to eat well. The negative effects would then cancel out the good effects.

The Socially Well-Adjusted Vegetarian

This report is about advancing the vegetarian cause through good manners, diplomacy, and public relations. Integrate your vegetarian lifestyle with the non-vegetarian world and achieve harmonious co-existence.

When we first become vegetarian, often we’re bursting with zeal, and try to convert everyone we know to our new vegetarian diet and lifestyle. It’s one thing to be right, but quite another to tell everybody else. As Mark Twain said, 'Few things are harder to put up with than a good example.' Miss Manners adds her bit: 'Ideological differences are no excuse for rudeness.'

Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian Eat Together

One in four advice letters to Savvy Veg is about vegetarian feeding non-vegetarian or vice-versa, which means that one in four people have this problem! Why should this sad situation continue, when it can be helped by good will, common sense, and a few ground rules?

Vegetarian and non-vegetarian need to work together to solve problems like global warming, environmental degradation, and poverty. Eating together is a great place to start. To enjoy sharing food, veg and non-veg need to set aside their differences, do their best to satisfy each other's needs, and place humanity before ideology. Hopefully, we can then do the same on a global level.
